Welcoming Guests

Because we live away from family and friends, we have a guest room that gets used a fair bit. We all love the free little toiletries we get in hotels, don't we? Sometimes because they are convenient and we forgot something, and other times because they're just fun. I keep a basket on top of the dresser in the guest room stocked with certain convenience items (many of which I myself pilfered from a hotel stay). I include
  • shampoo and conditioner
  • lotion
  • a new wrapped bar of soap
  • a wrapped maxipad (which cracked my sister in law up)
  • Q-tips and cotton balls
  • travel deoderant
  • shower cap
  • travel mending kit
  • pain reliver (Advil or Tylenol)
  • Benedryl
  • an extra wrapped toothbrush if I have one
Also since I knew that we were going to have lots of visitors, and since we often take them to do fun things, I bought this Guest Journal. It's unique because the guest can detail things they did on their trip, why they came, and other favorite moments.

Ironically, I was first introduced to this company by my friend Aidan, who gave me the Prayer Journal as a going away gift when we moved here two years ago. Aidan is the one who is coming to fill the guest room today.

(Adding edit to those of you who bemoan the lack of a guest room: you could still keep/make a little basket and even a guest journal, and just leave it in the kids' room, or wherever the guests stay. We had a huge walk in closet in our old house, and my daughter would sleep in there if guests took over her room)

Don't forget to check out the other tips from Rocks in My Dryer, by clicking the picture link below. Now there are descriptions of each tip, so if you are looking for cooking tips, frugal living, car care, or childcare, you can find what you need.

Love this idea! And I love that journal, too. We don't have a guest room at the moment, but I hope to someday and will definitely implement your ideas!

Oh--I wish I had a guest room with a guest journal. That is like the ultimate hospitality in my opinion.

I do this, too, but I put the basket in the guest/hall bathroom. I have that same journal that a friend gave to me when we moved into our house. I LOVE reading what the guests had to say. GREAT IDEAS, Jennifer!

That sounds like a good idea! We are going to be using our smaller house (which you can see on my blog) as a guest house once our bigger house (also on my blog) is finished...so this would be neat to do!

That is a great idea! In the past I've left chocolates on the pillow for guests. :-)

BTW, about your corn: the ears will most likely keep filling out. Your growing season is probably a few weeks behind ours. I still have scrawny ears too. Each day I can usually pick a few more. I just have to keep up with the Japanese beetles. They're bent on destroying everything this year. :-(
